Getting Windows Messenger to Display Name Properly

I'm using Windows Messenger 4.7, the one that came with my machine. I've never had any real problems with it until recently. The last two times when I signed in, it had my name as scholar (my full e-mail for messenger is scholar1983@hotmail.com so that's probably why), and when I tried to change it to my usual Eleni it wouldn't let me. Most of the time, it keeps my name the way I like it. The few times it hasn't I've been able to change it. Does anyone have a clue as to how I can get it to show up normally?

Omg the same thing is going on with me. I'll get the thing that says type in your password, and I do, and then it will say display name required. I'm just like um what is going on, so i type in a display name and i have to type in my password again. I dont know why this is happening

Well, I'm not getting that. It's signing me in and it's working. It just won't let me change my name.

I've only seen that if the account is not varified if you created a passport account. That is strange that it isn't allowing you to change your display name.

Wow! Okay, that was interesting. I had to go into my hotmail account and change my name there in order for it to change on Windows Messenger. I also upgraded to 5.1 so it wasn't that. Very stupid if you ask me, but then again, it is Microsoft.

Ah you figured it out before I got to you. Smile. Here is why. Due to the newer stuff you must do all from hotmail unless you have upgraded windows messenger. It's still a good messenger platform however.

I didn't have to put in my password again but do have to type in my display name every time I sign on. Trouble is, I like to have a humerous tag line after my name so have to type the whole thing in every damn time. If I tried to do anything with my hotmail account, I'd have to deal with that damn captia problem again because if you don't log into hotmail every 90 or 120 days, it acts like it doesn't recognize you, and I haven't used my hotmail account for probably a couple years. Very very irritating.

That's strange. I haven't used it in months and was able to sign in without a problem.

Same here. I use messenger way more than my hotmail account. I've been having the same problem too with the display name. It's so annoying!

Well, that's hotmail for you. God that is so shitty.

The problem, for me at least, is that I can't get any multimessenger clients that are fully accessible for Windows. Adium for the Mac has it's problems, sure, but at least I can log into all my different messenger accounts. On Windows, I'm pretty much stuck with Windows Messenger. I tried Miranda but it confused the hell out of me so I got rid of it.

To get around the capture issue, or mostly install firefox, then install webvisum www.webvisum.com it will solve them for you.

I forgot when installing firefox make sure it doesn't make itself your defualt web browser unless you want that. I only use it when I want to do some things that IE doesn't support. If you goof it is easy to change back. Simply open IE and say yes you want it back queen. Smile.
